Waltham Walk 2021 on Tour
After its sad but necessary cancellation in 2020 , we are delighted to announce that the Waltham Walk is back and returning over the weekend of Saturday 22nd/Sunday 23rd May, but not as you know it!
Teams from all over the UK will be able to enter as all participants will be based at their own HQ or locality, so no travelling to Essex will be necessary. Entry this year is also FREE.
Never heard of the Waltham Walk?
Well in normal times, it is very similar to the other two great Boys’ Brigade Hikes – the Cleveland Hike (North Yorkshire Moors) and the Kilbryde Hike (Glasgow area, W Scotland). The Waltham Walk is normally a two day team challenge expedition open to all youth organisations and held in rural Essex. It also celebrated its 50th event in 2019.
So how does this work with Government COVID-19 Regulations?
WW 2021 will operate within the Covid-19 regulations that are most likely to be operational in May, which will be Boys’ Brigade Stage 3, and Scout Association Amber stage. If the levels are lower than 3 or Amber, however, then WW21 on Tour won’t happen, but we are remaining optimistic!
Who can enter?
The age range for each event will the same as for our normal Waltham Walk Events.
Ages will be as at 31 August 2021, to tie in with school years, and there is overlap between each age group, as usual
Teeni Trek: Ages 10 – 12 Accompanied at all times by a leader
Mini Trek: Ages 12 – 14
Main Event: Ages 14 – 19
Unfortunately there will be no events for veterans this year.
What will happen on the day?
Teams will be based at their own HQ or nearby base, of their own choosing.
Teams will participate in a hike of about 8 miles with two intermediate checkpoints (i.e. 3 distinct legs) which will be determined by their leader, and pre-approved by WW21 control
At their local HQ, teams will then take part in three incidents (challenges), for which full instructions and marking regimes will be issued by Waltham Walk Committee in advance.
There will be a photographic treasure hunt, to avoid any objects actually having to be picked up. Again full instructions will be given to leaders in advance.
The event will be competitive and can be carried out either on Saturday 22nd or Sunday 23rd May, which is our usual Waltham Walk weekend. Points will be phoned or emailed into Waltham Walk Control on the day you participate, and results given out via a video presentation early the following week. This can be shown at the next unit meeting. Certificates will be issued to all participants, by post to leaders, for local presentation.
Sounds great! So how do we enter?
Please email Mike Wilding (WW Chairman) firstname.lastname@example.org with any questions but you can also download an entry form here.
The closing date for entries will be Tuesday 11th May 2021 to allow time for instructions for leaders to be given to prepare for the day
We look forward to seeing you!
We will update you with news as the weekend of WW2021 draws nearer but, for now, take care and keep safe.
