Waltham Walk – The Tough One

ARE YOU UP FOR A CHALLENGE?

The Waltham Walk is a challenge expedition that takes place in May each year around the Essex countryside and is open to teams from any youth organisation, school, company or just a group of friends.

Waltham Walk 2024 will take place on 18th & 19th May. This year we start at Wickham Bishops Village Hall, camp overnight at Danbury Campsite and finish at Purleigh Village Hall.

Teams can be male, female or mixed. It’s tough and challenging… but great fun!

The main event involves a walk of around 24 miles over two days, camping overnight. After the first day’s walking (normally about 17 miles) you will set up camp, prepare a meal and then, after sleeping overnight, cook breakfast and clear away before setting off for the second day.

Self-sufficiency is all part of the challenge so your team needs to carry everything required for the entire weekend (including your tent, sleeping and cooking equipment and food) but don’t worry: this means your burden becomes lighter as the walk progresses!

The only additional item you can collect during the weekend is water from the checkpoints dotted along the route and at the overnight campsite.

SO MUCH MORE THAN A WALK!

Each checkpoint is not only an opportunity to refill your water bottles however: here each team can earn important bonus points by taking on the challenge of our (in)famous CP ‘incidents’!

Teams need physical and mental dexterity along the route, as well as map reading, camping and culinary skills over two days, so no wonder the Waltham Walk, now in its 53rd year, has become known as ‘The Tough One’.
